I've been called weird for most of my life. For building things. For understanding systems. For posting about it publicly instead of keeping it to myself.
The word comes up every time the content shifts from consumption to creation. Post a plate of food, nobody blinks. Post a working AI agent pipeline, and the room gets quiet. Or worse, the word lands.
Weird.
The Paradox
The same people who use that word are the same people who make the phone call. When the Wi-Fi goes down. When the laptop won't boot. When someone needs a problem solved that nobody else in the room can touch. The weird guy becomes essential. Temporarily.
Then the problem gets fixed, and the word comes back.
This reveals something deeper about how American culture processes technical competence. We celebrate the results but penalize the visible process of getting there. We want the magic but don't want to watch the magician practice. Worse, we judge the magician for practicing in public.
The Cultural Blind Spot
This is largely a US phenomenon. In China, India, the Gulf states, and across East Asia, engineers are respected figures. Technical fluency is understood as economic survival. Governments are restructuring entire economies around AI infrastructure.
In the United States, the algorithm rewards a latte over a prototype. The culture has optimized for comfort content. Relatable is the highest compliment. Challenging is the fastest way to lose an audience.
This is a literacy problem. Not access. Literacy. The tools are available to everyone. The willingness to engage with them is gated by social permission. And social permission in the US says: stay relatable, stay comfortable, don't make anyone feel behind.
What I Actually Built
I'm not speaking from theory. I built the thing.
Project KAIZEN is an AI platform running on local hardware. Voice-controlled home automation. A local inference pipeline running language models without sending a single byte to the cloud. Custom-built agents handling diagnostics, monitoring, and task execution. Thirteen microservices. The same architectural discipline I apply to multi-billion dollar capital projects during the day, applied to my own stack at night.
The Uncomfortable Truth About AI
AI is restructuring the job market right now. While you scroll.
The people who develop fluency with these tools are becoming measurably more productive than those who don't. Headcount decisions are already being shaped by this gap. The uncomfortable truth: AI is not coming for your job. The person who learned how to work with AI is coming for your job. And that person might be the one you called weird for talking about it.
Every innovation cycle in the last thirty years followed the same arc. Email was weird. Online dating was weird. E-commerce was weird. Remote work was weird. In every case, the early adopters were mocked, then tolerated, then imitated. The question is whether you use the window to build or to scroll.
The Responsibility to Share
If you have the ability to understand these tools, if you can see what's coming, you have a responsibility to share it. Because the people around you need it.
It's weird to maintain a GitHub. It's weird to open-source your code base to the world. It's weird to publish your architecture, your workflows, your solutions, and hand them to strangers for free. In what universe is giving back to the global development community a strange thing to do?
The intent underneath all of it is the same: help people. If you can code, show someone how. If you built a system that works, open it up. If you automated something that saves time, document it. Show your worth by sharing your value with those who don't yet know how to do the things you can do. That's not weird. That's what builders are supposed to do.
The people who call it weird are a small minority. Most people who see the work respect it, engage with it, learn from it. But that small minority is loud enough to make someone with real capability consider going quiet. And that's the real cost. Not hurt feelings. Lost knowledge. Every time someone with ability decides it's easier to stay silent than to be called weird, the people who needed what they know lose access to it.
I'd rather be the weird guy who said something than the quiet one who watched people get blindsided.
The Weird Ones Were Never Wrong
Every paradigm shift has its weird ones. The ones who saw it early. The ones who built before it was fashionable. The ones who took the mockery and kept working because they understood something the room hadn't caught up to yet.
Twenty years ago, building an IRC network out of a college apartment was weird. That network became a two-decade foundation in infrastructure, security, and systems architecture. Ten years ago, automating a home was weird. That automation became the prototype for everything I run today.
The weird ones were never wrong. They were just early.
